This Open Innovation Call is closed. The pitch final was held on september 24, 2019 in New York City. The winner of the Open Innovation Call was Gaia Technologies that seeked to improve air quality by installing plants on surface areas throughout New York City – and Airlite, a technological paint which reduces urban heat and air pollution.
The City of New York was looking for new and innovative ideas, technologies, and approaches to reduce the negative impacts of urban air pollution and the heat island effect. The proposed solutions could be approach the challenge from a mitigation perspective or from an adaptation perspective. Where possible, the City of New York would like to address the urban areas, which have the highest rates of heat-related illness and mortality and known air quality vulnerability issues. The ultimate goal of the challenge was to identify and pilot the most promising solution within the City in the hopes that it could improve upon the current state of air quality and/or urban heat vulnerability. The solution, when piloted, were needed to be measurable in its effectiveness to do so.
The challenge had two tracks. Track 1 focused on products and services whereas Track 2 focused on urban design. Participants in both tracks had the opportunity to present their products, services or visions of NYC to an evaluation panel from New York City municipality agencies, academic institutions, and other sustainability and resiliency thought leaders. The winners in both tracks was offered a range of incentives, which are elaborated in the competition manual.
